The five stages in detail
What actually happens at each stage, in the order most Indian students go through it.
1. Find the right programme
Start with the DAAD International Programmes database and the university's own pages, not with ranking lists. Check three things for every programme: the language of instruction, whether your Indian degree is accepted as an entrance qualification, and the exact application window, because many programmes have only one intake per year. Universities of applied sciences (Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften) are often more practical and less crowded than the famous big names.
2. Complete the APS verification
Since 2023, Indian applicants need an APS certificate before most German universities and the student visa will accept their documents. APS India checks that your degree and transcripts are genuine. The check takes several weeks to a few months depending on volume, so it is the first thing to start, not the last. 3. Prove your financing
For the visa you must show you can pay for your first year. Almost everyone does this with a blocked account (Sperrkonto): you deposit the required yearly amount with a licensed provider, and after arrival you can withdraw a fixed monthly sum. The required amount is adjusted regularly, so take the current figure from the German mission's website, then use our blocked account calculator to see the monthly payout and provider fees. A formal sponsorship declaration (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a person living in Germany is the less common alternative.
4. The visa appointment and timeline
You apply at the German mission responsible for your region in India. Appointments open in batches and fill quickly in the months before the winter semester, so book as early as the system allows. Bring originals and copies of everything: admission letter, APS certificate, blocked account confirmation, health insurance proof and academic records. Processing usually takes a few weeks after the appointment; plan a buffer before your semester starts and do not book a non-refundable flight before the visa is issued.
5. Your first two weeks in Germany
The order matters: register your address at the Bürgeramt (Anmeldung) first, because the registration certificate is needed for the bank account and the residence permit. Then activate your health insurance, open a current account, complete university enrolment, and only then apply for the residence permit at the Ausländerbehörde if your entry visa covers a shorter period. Working during your studies
International students in Germany are generally allowed to work a limited number of days or hours per year alongside their studies. Many students take on part time roles at university, in cafés or as working students in companies. Exact limits and conditions depend on your visa and current rules, so always confirm with your university's international office and official sources.

Can I study in Germany for free after 12th from India?
Many public universities charge no general tuition fee, but studying is not completely free: you still pay a semester contribution, living costs, health insurance, travel and visa expenses. An Indian Class 12 certificate alone does not always qualify you for direct admission. Depending on your qualification and course, you may need a Studienkolleg and its entrance exam, or another recognised route. Check the exact admission rules on the university website and the DAAD admission database.
Is a study gap accepted by German universities?
Yes, a study gap can be accepted. Germany has no single nationwide maximum gap for university admission. Each university and programme sets its own requirements. Explain the gap honestly and support it with evidence such as work certificates, internships, courses, exam preparation or family responsibilities. A clear academic reason for choosing the programme is also important for your application and visa.
Can Indian students get permanent residence after studying in Germany?
Graduation does not automatically give you permanent residence. After completing a German degree, you can usually apply for a residence permit to look for qualified work for up to 18 months. Once you find eligible skilled employment, you can change to a work residence permit or EU Blue Card. Graduates of German universities may qualify for a settlement permit after working in qualified employment and meeting the legal conditions, including pension contributions and German-language requirements. What German language level do I need to study in Germany?
It depends on the language of instruction. For a German-taught degree, universities usually ask for proof at roughly B2 to C1 level, most commonly TestDaF, DSH or Goethe certificates; some Studienkolleg and foundation routes accept lower levels. For English-taught programmes you normally need IELTS, TOEFL or similar instead, and German is often not an admission condition at all, though everyday life and part time work are much easier with at least basic German. Your language level directly decides which programmes you can apply to, so check the exact requirement on each programme's admission page and in the DAAD database before you plan exams. For staying after graduation, German also matters: skilled work permits and the settlement permit expect around B1 or higher.
How much total money is required to study in Germany from India?
Plan for more than the visa proof-of-funds amount. Your first-year budget normally includes the current blocked-account requirement, semester contributions, APS and visa costs, health insurance, flights, accommodation deposit and initial setup expenses. Tuition may also apply at private universities, certain programmes and some public-university situations.
