Germany work visa from India: the full process.

Written by the India to Germany Guide team · Last reviewed

A German work permit is not one single document. You pick the visa route that fits your qualification, apply at the German mission responsible for your state in India, and then convert that visa into a residence permit after you arrive.

This page walks through eligibility, the document list, the appointment and VFS steps, what it costs and how long each stage realistically takes. Final requirements always come from the official German sources linked below.

Which route fits you

Three routes cover almost every Indian applicant. The difference is your qualification and whether you already hold a job offer.

EU Blue Card

For university graduates with a recognised degree and a job offer above the salary threshold. Fastest path to permanent residence, often in 21 to 33 months.

Skilled Worker Visa

For a recognised academic degree or vocational training with a concrete job offer. No fixed high salary threshold, but the qualification must fit the role.

Opportunity Card

The points based job seeker route. You move to Germany for up to twelve months to search for work, with part time work allowed while you search.

Documents for the visa appointment

Missions publish slightly different checklists. This is the core set that almost every work visa file contains.

  • Passport valid well beyond your planned stay, plus copies of the data page and older visas.
  • Two or three completed national visa application forms and a signed declaration of accuracy.
  • Recent biometric photographs that meet the German passport photo standard.
  • Employment contract or binding job offer with salary, job description and start date.
  • Degree certificates and transcripts, with the anabin printout or a recognition decision.
  • German style CV and, for regulated professions, proof of registration or licence steps.
  • Health insurance cover for the period between arrival and the start of your German policy.
  • Proof of accommodation if requested, and the visa fee payment receipt.

Step by step, from India to Germany

  1. 1. Check recognition

Look up your university and degree in anabin. If your profession is regulated, start the recognition procedure through the Recognition in Germany portal before anything else, because it takes the longest.

  2. 2. Secure the job offer

Apply with a German style CV and a short cover letter. Ask the employer for a signed contract that states the salary, the job description and the planned start date.

  3. 3. Book the appointment

Find the German mission responsible for your state and book the national visa appointment on its official booking system. Slots open in waves, so check regularly instead of paying an agent.

  4. 4. Prepare the file

Assemble the checklist in the order the mission lists it, with the required number of copies. Get translations done by a recognised translator when a document is not in English or German.

  5. 5. Attend the appointment

Submit the file, give biometrics and pay the fee at VFS or the mission counter. Keep the receipt and the tracking reference, they are your only way to follow the case.

  6. 6. Wait and travel

The mission may ask for extra documents, so answer quickly. Once the visa is stamped, book flights, arrange first accommodation and plan the address registration in Germany.

  7. 7. Register after arrival

Do the Anmeldung at the local citizens office, open a bank account, start your German health insurance and apply for the residence permit card at the Ausländerbehörde.

What it costs and how long it takes

Fees change, so treat this as a budget structure and take the current amounts from the mission website for your city.

National visa fee

Set in euro, collected in rupees at the mission exchange rate on the day.

VFS service and courier

Service charge per applicant, plus optional courier return of the passport.

Translations and attestation

Certified translations of degrees and, in some cases, document attestation.

Recognition procedure

Only for vocational and regulated professions, charged by the responsible body.

First months in Germany

Deposit for the flat, furniture, insurance and living costs before the first salary.

On timing, plan in three blocks: recognition and job search, which you control; the appointment wait, which depends on your city; and the processing time after submission. Many applicants need several months in total, so start the recognition step as early as possible.

Official sources to verify everything

Rules and fees change. These German government pages are the binding source for your application.

  • Make it in Germany

Official German government portal for skilled workers, with visa checks and a job board.

  • Bundesagentur für Arbeit

The Federal Employment Agency, with the official jobs database for Germany.

  • Recognition in Germany

Check whether your Indian degree or training is recognised, and who decides it.

  • German Missions in India

Embassy and consulates in India: visa categories, appointments and document lists.

  • BAMF

Federal Office for Migration and Refugees: residence permits and integration courses.

German work visa: common questions

What is the difference between a German work visa and a work permit?

The visa is the entry sticker you get from the German mission in India. After arrival you register your address and apply at the local Ausländerbehörde for the residence permit, which is the card that actually carries your right to work in Germany.

Do I need a job offer for a German work visa from India?

Yes for the EU Blue Card and the Skilled Worker Visa: you need a signed contract or a binding offer that matches your qualification. Without an offer you can use the points based Opportunity Card and search for work inside Germany for up to twelve months.

What documents does the German embassy ask for?

Typically the national visa application form, passport with copies, biometric photos, the employment contract and job description, degree certificates with anabin or recognition proof, CV, health insurance for the first weeks and the fee receipt. The mission for your city publishes the binding checklist.

How much does a German work visa cost from India?

The national visa fee is set in euro and charged in rupees at the mission rate, and you pay extra for the VFS service charge, courier, photos and document attestation. Budget separately for translations, recognition fees and your first months of living costs in Germany.

How long does the German work visa process take?

Appointment waiting time plus processing differs by city and season, so read the current figure on the website of the mission responsible for your state. Most applicants plan several months between signing the contract and boarding the flight.

Can my spouse and children come with me?

Family reunification is possible with most work permits if you show sufficient income and living space. Spouses of Blue Card holders usually do not need to prove German language skills and may work without restriction once they hold their permit.

Is my Indian degree enough for a work visa?

Check your university and programme in the official anabin database. An H+ institution with a matching degree entry is normally accepted. Vocational training and regulated professions such as nursing, teaching or medicine need a formal recognition decision before the visa is granted.
