How the Modified Bavarian Formula works
German admission offices cannot read an Indian percentage or CGPA directly, so they convert it onto the German scale of 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (lowest pass). The standard method is the Modified Bavarian Formula, agreed by the German education ministries:
German grade = 1 + 3 × (maximum score − your score) ÷ (maximum score − minimum passing score)
Three numbers decide the result: your score, the maximum your university awards, and the minimum you needed to pass. That last number is the one most applicants get wrong. It is printed on the grading key of your transcript and is usually 40 percent, or 4.0 on a ten point CGPA. Using 0 instead of the real pass mark makes your German grade look far better than the admission office will calculate.
If your university grades on a ten point CGPA, do not multiply by 9.5 first. Feed the CGPA straight in with a maximum of 10 and the pass value from your transcript. Multiplying first is an Indian convention and gives a different German grade.

A 3.2 CGPA on a ten point scale falls below the usual pass mark of 4.0, so the formula returns a value worse than 4.0 and counts as not passed. The same 3.2 on a four point GPA scale converts to 2.2.

Which formula do German universities use?
Most use the Modified Bavarian Formula: German grade = 1 + 3 × (maximum − your score) ÷ (maximum − minimum passing score). Some universities apply their own table, so treat the result as a close estimate.
What minimum should I enter for an Indian degree?
For a percentage system the pass mark is usually 40 (sometimes 35 or 50). For a 10 point CGPA the pass value is usually 4 or 5. Use the number printed on your transcript or grading key.
Is a lower number better in Germany?
Yes. 1.0 is the best possible grade and 4.0 is the lowest pass. Anything above 4.0 counts as failed.
Do I still need APS?
Yes. Indian applicants need an APS certificate for the student visa regardless of the converted grade. Start it early, it takes several weeks.
What is 3.2 CGPA in German grade?
On a 10 point scale with 4.0 as the pass mark, a 3.2 CGPA sits below the pass line, so the formula gives a value worse than 4.0 and German universities would treat it as not passed. If your 3.2 is on a 4 point GPA scale with 2.0 as the pass mark, it converts to 2.2, which is a solid “good” in the German system.

Which grade do I need for a master's place in Germany?
Most public universities look for 2.5 or better, competitive courses at TUM, RWTH or the TU9 group often expect 2.0 or better, and some universities of applied sciences accept up to 3.0. A weaker grade can still work with strong work experience, GRE or a relevant project record.
