Salary and tax questions

Which tax class applies to me?

Single people get class 1, single parents class 2. Married couples pick 4/4, or 3/5 when one salary is clearly higher. Class 6 is for a second job.

What is a good gross salary in Germany?

IT and engineering roles for people arriving from India typically start between €50,000 and €70,000 gross per year. The EU Blue Card threshold is the number to check before you sign.

Do I have to pay church tax?

Only if you register as a member of a tax collecting church. Most Indians in Germany write no religion or a non registered faith on the Anmeldung form and pay nothing.

Why is my first payslip lower?

Until your tax ID reaches the employer you may be taxed under class 6. It is refunded automatically once the ID is registered, or with your annual tax return.

What is 2,500 EUR gross to net in Germany?

For a single employee in tax class 1 with no church tax, roughly €1,700 to €1,780 per month lands in the account. Income tax takes about €230, pension around €233, health insurance about €205, plus care and unemployment insurance. Tax class 3 raises the net to roughly €1,900.

How much tax is deducted from a German salary?

Expect 35 to 45 percent of gross to go in deductions, and only part of that is income tax. Social contributions are roughly 20 percent of gross and buy your pension, health cover, long term care and unemployment protection. The income tax share rises with the salary, from near zero at the tax free allowance to 42 percent on the top slice of a high income.

Is a 50,000 EUR salary enough to live in Germany?

Yes for one person in most cities. €50,000 gross is about €2,900 to €3,000 net per month in tax class 1. In Leipzig or Dresden that is comfortable; in Munich rent alone can take a third of it. With a spouse and child, tax class 3 plus Kindergeld shifts the maths in your favour.
