German health insurance comparison

Health insurance is the document the embassy checks first and the one that decides how easy your first doctor visit will be. Here is what Indians in Germany actually use, with cost and English support.

Easiest option for a student visa from India

Expatrio bundles the visa health insurance with the blocked account, so both documents arrive together. It is a partner link, so we earn a commission if you sign up, at no extra cost to you.

Insurance questions

Do I need German health insurance for the visa?

Yes. Health insurance is mandatory in Germany and the embassy asks for proof before issuing the visa. Students get a confirmation letter from a public fund, employees are enrolled by the employer.

Public or private, what should I pick?

Public for almost everyone. It covers family members at no extra cost, accepts pre existing conditions and you can switch funds easily. Private mainly suits high earners above the yearly threshold and some over 30 students.

What about the first weeks before enrolment?

Take incoming travel insurance for the gap between landing and the start of your public cover. Most language course and job seeker visa holders need it for the whole stay.

Can my spouse and children join my insurance?

In the public system yes, family insurance is free as long as they have little or no income. Private policies charge a separate premium per person.
